8 Do’s and Don’ts After Breast Reduction Surgery

Do’s:

  1. Follow Your Surgeon’s Instructions – Adhere to all post-op care guidelines, including wound care, medications, and follow-up appointments.
  2. Wear a Supportive Bra – Use a soft, wireless, or surgical bra as recommended to minimize swelling and support healing.
  3. Rest and Take It Easy – Give your body time to heal by avoiding strenuous activities and getting plenty of sleep.
  4. Stay Hydrated and Eat Nutritious Foods – Proper nutrition aids in faster recovery and reduces complications.
  5. Keep Your Incisions Clean and Dry – Prevent infection by following hygiene instructions carefully. Only change tape and plasters when absolutely necessary
  6. Sleep on Your Back – Avoid sleeping on your stomach or sides to prevent putting pressure on your breasts.
  7. Monitor for Signs of Infection – Watch for redness, swelling, or unusual discharge and report concerns to your doctor immediately.
  8. Be Patient with Swelling and Scarring – Healing takes time, and scars will fade over months to a year. Keep using micropore tape for 3 months.

Don’ts:

  1. Don’t Lift Heavy Objects – Avoid lifting anything over 2.5 – 5kg’s for at least 4-6 weeks.
  2. Don’t Smoke or Drink Alcohol – These can slow healing and increase the risk of complications.
  3. Don’t Skip Medications – Take prescribed pain relievers and antibiotics as directed to manage discomfort and prevent infection.
  4. Don’t Engage in High-Impact Exercise – Avoid activities like running or jumping until your surgeon clears you.
  5. Don’t Wear Underwire Bras – These can irritate healing incisions; opt for soft, supportive bras instead.
  6. Don’t Rush into Sexual Activity – Wait until your doctor approves, usually after several weeks.
  7. Don’t Soak in Baths or Swimming Pools – Avoid submerging your incisions in water until they are fully healed.
  8. Don’t Expect Instant Results – Swelling can take weeks or months to subside, so be patient with your new shape.
